You don’t need all the answers before you start.
A first triathlon can feel like a big leap. So can asking for help when you already train. Here are answers to the questions you might be turning over before getting in touch. Select a question to expand its answer.
Getting started
Do I need to be fit before I contact you?
No. The first conversation starts with where you are today: your current activity, experience and goal. You don’t need to prove yourself before asking for help. We discuss what preparation is realistic and which service could suit you.
Is this just for beginners?
Zero to Finish Line is the name of my 1:1 coaching service. It isn’t a requirement to be starting from zero. Whether you’re considering your first triathlon or preparing for another event, tell me about your experience and what you want to work towards so we can discuss the fit.
What if I haven’t chosen an event yet?
You can still get in touch. Share the kind of challenge you’re considering, your training background and the time you have available. We can discuss a realistic direction before you commit to an event or a coaching option.
How much time will I need to train?
There isn’t one number that suits everyone. Your starting point, event, time until race day and weekly availability all matter. Tell me what you can realistically commit to so we can discuss whether your goal and preparation time line up.
Can training fit around shift work and family?
That needs to be part of the conversation from the beginning. I work a demanding roster myself, so I understand that every week doesn’t look the same. With 1:1 coaching, check-ins give us a way to discuss changing availability and what needs to change in your programming. Guided Plans do not include those check-ins.
What if I’m worried I’m too slow or inexperienced?
You don’t need a particular pace to start a conversation. Your background helps me understand your starting point; it isn’t something you need to apologise for. Tell me what you can currently do and what feels difficult. We’ll discuss the gap between that and your goal.
Choosing your support
What does Zero to Finish Line include?
For $49 per week, you get personalised programming delivered through TrainingPeaks, ongoing workout feedback and check-ins. It’s online 1:1 coaching: a plan plus an ongoing relationship with your coach. We discuss your goals, current training and availability so your programming has a clear purpose.
How are Guided Plans different?
Guided Plans are $25 per week. Your programming is taken care of and your workouts appear in TrainingPeaks, but there is no workout feedback and no check-ins. This suits athletes who want a structure to follow and are comfortable managing their training independently.
Which option is right if I want accountability?
Explore Zero to Finish Line. The ongoing feedback and check-ins give you someone to discuss your progress and challenges with. If you mainly want the programming and are happy to get on with the sessions yourself, Guided Plans may be a better fit.
Can you build a plan just for my event?
Yes. With a Custom Event Plan, we catch up to discuss where you are now, the event you’re aiming for and the time you can commit. I then build a bespoke program around that brief. The price is quoted individually, and we agree on the plan length, delivery and included support before starting.
How is a custom plan different from Guided Plans?
A Custom Event Plan is a one-off program built around an agreed event and brief. Guided Plans are a weekly programming service delivered through TrainingPeaks. Neither should be confused with ongoing 1:1 coaching: custom-plan support is agreed upfront, while Guided Plans exclude workout feedback and check-ins.
Training day to day
How does online coaching work?
For Zero to Finish Line and Guided Plans, your sessions are delivered in TrainingPeaks. You can see your planned workouts and record your training there. The difference is the support around the plan: Zero to Finish Line includes ongoing feedback and check-ins; Guided Plans do not.
Do I need to understand TrainingPeaks already?
You can enquire without being familiar with it. Let me know whether you already have an account and how you currently track your training. We’ll confirm the account setup needed for your chosen service before you begin.
What happens if I miss training or my week changes?
Tell me what’s changed. With 1:1 coaching, that’s something we can discuss through the ongoing coaching relationship and check-ins. You don’t need to pretend every week has gone perfectly. Guided Plans do not include feedback or check-ins, so consider 1:1 coaching if you want that ongoing support when things change.
Do I need to live in Rockhampton?
No. I’m based in Rockhampton, but the coaching and Guided Plans are delivered online. Get in touch with your location, goal and availability so we can discuss how the service would work for you.
What should I tell you when I get in touch?
Start with your goal or event, the date if you have one, what you’re doing now and how much time you can train. Tell me whether you want ongoing coaching, programming to follow independently or a one-off event plan. If you’re unsure, just say so—we can work through that together.
Signing up and getting started
Can I sign up online, or do I need to speak to Matt first?
You can subscribe online to Zero to Finish Line 1:1 coaching or Guided Plans. You’re also welcome to talk it through first. If you’re unsure whether your swimming ability, fitness or time until race day suits your goal, start with a conversation. Custom Event Plans are discussed and quoted before payment.
How much will I pay, and how often?
Zero to Finish Line 1:1 coaching is A$49 per week. Guided Plans are A$25 per week, with no lock-in contract. These are recurring weekly subscriptions, rather than one-off plan purchases. Custom Event Plans are quoted individually before we start.
Will a training plan appear immediately after I pay?
Your programming is prepared around your starting point, goal and availability. After subscribing, we’ll organise your starting information and TrainingPeaks setup before your programming begins. You don’t need to guess the right sessions while we work out the details—get in touch with any questions about getting started.
Are Guided Plans a fixed-term commitment?
No. Guided Plans are A$25 per week with no lock-in contract. If you want to stop or discuss changing your support, contact Matt so we can arrange the next step.
That goal doesn’t need to stay a “one day” idea.
You don’t have to arrive with a perfect schedule or a polished plan. Send me a few lines about what you want to achieve and where you’re starting. We’ll discuss what a realistic next step could look like.

What happens after an enquiry? Matt will get back to you to discuss your goal, suitable support and the next step. Sending an enquiry doesn’t subscribe you to a plan.
